The Witch as a Symbol of Resistance

The witch has always made a convenient scapegoat—blamed for illness, misfortune, the unexplained. But she’s also a powerful symbol of resistance: to oppression, to patriarchy, to erasure.

I believe that’s part of why the figure of the witch still resonates today. She speaks to those who have been othered, silenced, or dismissed—and she reminds us of our power to reclaim narrative, knowledge, and voice.

In Witch Country, I didn’t want to just mourn the past—I wanted to celebrate the enduring spirit of the witch in our landscapes and lives. Especially for women, the witch is not just a historical figure. She’s a mirror, a map, a flame.
